The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), a nonprofit based in Washington, D.C., seeks a passionate, sustainability-minded student to fill the Product Development & Market Research Intern position. The Product Development & Market Research Intern will gain valuable insight into the world of green business certification programs by working with multiple teams across the organization.
USGBC is the nonprofit organization that created and manages the LEED Rating System, the most widely used green building rating system in the world. USGBC and GBCI have generated sub-divisions within the organization to focus on the development of the next big initiatives that will impact the built and human environment, including: SITES (sustainable landscapes), PEER (reliable and resilient power systems), Parksmart (sustainable parking and mobility), Investor Confidence Project (energy efficiency retrofit), TRUE (zero waste), and City Climate Planner (local climate action).
Overall responsibilities will include research on global sustainability efforts, market analysis, and content development. This unpaid internship is based out of our D.C. Headquarters.
Internship details include Support or lead research projects including those focused on the benefits of sustainability certification programs in addressing global health and environmental challenges. Assist market development efforts by preparing and organizing content, drafting one pagers, business case development, and identifying relevant research and news articles. Help develop case studies, sector specific messaging, and issue briefs relating to non-LEED rating systems, through research, data collection, and interviews. Identify and evaluate digital tools and resources to streamline and improve the delivery of USGBC/GBCI products and programs.
After completing the internship, the individual will be able to: Demonstrate experience in non-profit workplace and sector Clearly express concepts of sustainability and green building, with a thorough understanding of multiple green business certification programs, and their impact on global environmental challenges Demonstrate familiarity with key players and effective strategies in the global green building movement Demonstrate experience working with and supporting a geographically distributed team in pursuit of shared goals

Experience Requirements Current enrollment in undergraduate or graduate program of study is required. Major or specialization in Environmental Studies, Environmental Sciences, Communications, Business, Marketing, or relevant experience is preferred. LEED Green Associate preferred Interest in and knowledge of the green business certification systems, such as LEED, TRUE, PEER, and SITES. Superior verbal and written communication skills; able to produce brief, clear, and persuasive written communications, e.g. market analysis, issue briefs, one pagers, and technical reports.
